The tasks of our Experts are to:
 • authenticate works of art of all kinds and from all periods for private individuals
 • draw up valuation reports for insurance companies before and after insured losses occur.
 • work on behalf of Auction Companies, Museums, Courts, Customs and Excise and Antiques Fairs.

They assist auctioneers in drawing up their catalogues, give specialist classes and participate in the classification of works of art in museums, both in France and abroad.

Our Experts work in assessing the value of our national heritage and that of other nations.

The Chamber currently has around 280 members, experts, trainees and correspondents. Many of them are approved for Court work and by Customs and Excise.

The Chamber is divided into 10 regions covering the whole of the country. Each of these regions is chaired by a President, assisted by a Bureau.

In the Art and Antiquities world, the diversity of different domains is so great that no single person could possibly have an in-depth knowledge of everything. This is why the C.N.E.S. only approves its Experts for a maximum of THREE specialities in which they have acquired nationwide renown and in which they have provided indubitable proof of their extensive knowledge.

In order to obtain approval for a given speciality, C.N.E.S. trainees, who are necessarily professionals on the art market, must follow the specialist courses organised at a national level, of which there are three per year, and within a maximum of five years must write a dissertation on a subject relative to their particular speciality, before undergoing a practical examination in front of a panel of experienced professionals.

The C.N.E.S. Experts undertake to carry out their duties with sincerity, impartiality, competence and integrity. They are bound by an oath to professional secrecy and are legally liable for their appraisals for a period of 30 years for individual operations, and 10 years for public sales. In order to provide an absolutely comprehensive guarantee, the C.N.E.S. requires that each of its members take out a professional insurance policy which covers risks of error as well as accidents to or loss of objects which may occur in the course of their duties.

THE NATIONAL CHAMBER OF SPECIALIST EXPERTS has European wide scope, thanks to the acknowledged skills of its members. It is a founding member of the EUROPEAN CONFEDERATION OF ART EXPERTS, the organisation which has established the profession's Code of Conduct.
Headquarters of the C.N.E.S. are located 16, rue de la Grange Batelière - 75009 - PARIS - France
